US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is on an official visit to New Delhi from June 17-18, 2024, following an invitation from Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser. Accompanied by senior US government officials and industry leaders, Sullivan’s visit underscores the ongoing high-level engagement between the two nations, focusing on a robust and multifaceted agenda under the India-US global strategic partnership.
This visit builds on the momentum created by the India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joseph Biden during the Quad Summit in Tokyo on May 24, 2022. The iCET aims to foster collaboration in various advanced technological domains, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, defense innovation, space exploration, and advanced telecommunications. Over time, this initiative has expanded to encompass additional critical areas such as biotechnology, critical minerals and rare earth processing technologies, digital connectivity and infrastructure, and advanced materials.
The primary objective of Sullivan’s visit is to review the progress of iCET and set new priorities and deliverables. Today’s discussions between the NSAs are pivotal for assessing bilateral issues and enhancing the India-US partnership on regional and global matters of mutual interest. A significant component of the visit is the first annual review of iCET, which involves an inter-departmental delegation from both countries, aimed at evaluating the initiative’s advancements and future directions.
On June 18, Sullivan and Doval will address participants at the India-US iCET Roundtable, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry. This roundtable will include CEOs from leading industries, highlighting the critical role of public-private partnerships in driving technological innovation and cooperation between the two countries.
In addition to his meetings with NSA Doval, Sullivan also met with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar earlier today and is expected to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These interactions are integral to reinforcing the strategic dialogue and ensuring cohesive efforts in addressing both nations’ shared objectives in technology and security.
Sullivan’s visit signifies a continued commitment to the India-US partnership, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in critical and emerging technologies. As both countries navigate the complexities of the global technological landscape, this high-level engagement promises to bolster their strategic alliance and foster innovation, security, and economic growth.
