India marked a historic milestone as it conducted the first-ever test firing of its own 1500 Horsepower (HP) engine for Main Battle Tanks. This groundbreaking event unfolded at BEML’s Engine division in Mysuru complex on March 20, 2024. The achievement signals a significant leap forward in India’s defence capabilities, highlighting its technological prowess and dedication to self-reliance in defence technologies.

The 1500 HP engine represents a revolutionary advancement in military propulsion systems, boasting cutting-edge features such as a high power-to-weight ratio and the ability to operate in extreme conditions like high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures, and desert environments. With its state-of-the-art technologies, the engine stands shoulder to shoulder with the most advanced engines globally.

During the inauguration of the Test Cell, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane hailed the achievement as a transformative moment that will bolster the capabilities of the Armed Forces.

BEML’s CMD, Shantanu Roy, emphasized that this accomplishment cements BEML’s role as a vital contributor to defence production in the country, demonstrating its commitment to fulfilling the nation’s requirements in this crucial sector.

The successful test-firing of the 1500 HP engine marks the completion of Generation One, focusing on technology stabilization. Generation Two will witness BEML producing engines for various trials at the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, a DRDO laboratory, and integrating them into actual vehicles for user testing. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2025, following its initiation in August 2020. The project’s meticulous structuring into five major milestones ensures timely completion and adherence to quality standards.

In addition to inaugurating the Test Cell, the Defence Secretary unveiled the ‘Wall of Fame’ to honour the exceptional efforts of the BEML team. This wall symbolizes their contribution to advancing the defence capabilities of the country and achieving milestones in indigenous technological innovation. The event witnessed the presence of senior civil and military officers from the Ministry of Defence, industry partners, and officials of BEML Ltd.
