In recent months, reports have surfaced regarding Indian nationals being ensnared by false promises of lucrative job opportunities in Cambodia, only to fall victim to human traffickers.

These unsuspecting individuals are coerced into engaging in online financial scams and other illegal activities, highlighting the prevalence of this insidious crime.

In response to these concerning developments, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday (April 4, 2024) has issued a strict advisory to Indian nationals intending to seek employment in Cambodia. It emphasizes the importance of exercising caution and vigilance when pursuing opportunities abroad, particularly in regions known for human trafficking activities.

The advisory strongly urges Indian nationals to engage only with authorized agents when considering employment opportunities in Cambodia. Additionally, it underscores the critical need to thoroughly vet the background of prospective employers in the country, to ensure legitimacy and safeguard against exploitation.

Furthermore, the MEA has affirmed its commitment to addressing the issue and providing support to affected Indian nationals. Through its Mission in Phnom Penh, the Ministry is collaborating closely with Cambodian authorities to combat human trafficking and offer assistance to those impacted by these illicit practices.

Efforts are underway to enhance awareness among Indian communities regarding the risks associated with seeking employment overseas, particularly in regions where human trafficking is prevalent. Education and outreach programs are being implemented to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources necessary to make informed decisions and protect themselves from exploitation.

The advisory serves as a timely reminder of the dangers posed by human traffickers who prey on vulnerable individuals seeking better opportunities abroad. It underscores the need for collective action, involving governments, law enforcement agencies, and civil society, to eradicate this scourge and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals.

As India continues its efforts to combat human trafficking and protect its citizens abroad, Indian nationals can better safeguard themselves against the threats posed by human trafficking and exploitation in foreign lands.
