The 13th edition of the Joint Military Exercise MAITREE commenced yesterday in Tak Province, Thailand, with a grand opening ceremony. This event marks the resumption of the annual exercise after a four-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The last edition was held in Umroi, Meghalaya, in 2019.

The ceremony featured Lieutenant General Kittipong Jamsuwan, 3rd Corps Commander of the Thailand Army, and Group Captain Brijesh Paul, Defence Attaché to Thailand from the Indian Air Force, as chief guests. Their opening remarks underscored the deep civilizational and historical ties between India and Thailand. Both emphasized the importance of enhancing military collaboration through exercises like MAITREE.

The ceremony was graced by Lieutenant General Kittipong Jamsuwan, 3rd Corps Commander of the Thailand Army, and Group Captain Brijesh Paul, Defence Attaché to Thailand representing the Indian Air Force, as chief guests.

In a gesture symbolizing cooperation and mutual respect, the two sides exchanged mementos. Group Captain Paul handed over the Indian Army contingent’s flag to Lieutenant General Jamsuwan for the duration of the exercise, signifying the formal commencement of the joint training.

The ceremony also featured an engaging interaction between the representatives and their respective contingents, fostering camaraderie and understanding. The highlight of the event was a thrilling display of Thai martial arts by the troops of the Thailand Army, showcasing their skills and cultural heritage.
