In a bid to enhance their long standing relationship, India and Zambia have come together to explore new avenues of collaboration, particularly in the manufacturing of small arms, ammunition, and other defence equipment. This strategic move was discussed during a meeting between the Defence Secretary of India, Giridhar Aramane, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence in Zambia, Norman Chipakupaku, which took place in New Delhi on October 20, 2023.

The diplomatic discourse was a continuation of the deep-rooted history between the two countries, emphasizing the significance of their ongoing partnership. With a 15-member delegation from Zambia visiting India from October 15 to October 22, 2023, both nations aim to deepen their defence ties and broaden their collaboration in the defence sector.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation, inked between India and Zambia in 2019, provides a comprehensive framework for various defence collaborations. This MoU has paved the way for a promising future in defence cooperation, ensuring mutual benefits for both nations.

During the meeting, India’s Defence Secretary assured Zambia of full-fledged support, including military training and capacity building for the Zambian defence forces. This support will be extended through a series of military courses and the deployment of Indian training teams. The commitment to strengthening Zambia’s defence capabilities demonstrates India’s dedication to fostering security and stability in the region.

Aramane also highlighted the exceptional capabilities of Indian defence industries, covering a broad spectrum of operations under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This initiative has not only bolstered India’s domestic defence production but also has made it a reliable partner in providing cost-effective and high-quality defence equipment to its allies, including Zambia.

Norman Chipakupaku, the Permanent Secretary of Defence for Zambia, expressed his appreciation for the advancements made by Indian defence industries and eagerly anticipated their support in providing modern, cost-effective equipment to enhance the Zambian defence forces’ capabilities.

As part of this diplomatic exchange, the Zambian delegation engaged with Indian defence establishments and toured various manufacturing facilities, including those in the public and private sectors. This experience allowed them to witness firsthand the strides made by Indian defence industries, reinforcing the potential for collaboration between the two nations.

Moreover, the interaction extended to mutual areas of interest, including defence cooperation activities. Norman Chipakupaku and senior Zambian army officers met with Lt Gen Tarun Kumar Aich, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Strategy), to discuss potential areas of collaboration. The Zambian delegation is also scheduled to visit the defence industrial complex in the National Capital Region, further solidifying their understanding of India’s defence capabilities.

This collaborative endeavor between India and Zambia showcases the dedication of both nations to reinforce their defence capabilities and promote peace and stability in the region. The meeting and engagements in New Delhi serve as a testament to the commitment of these two countries in deepening their bilateral defence ties. It paves the way for a more secure and prosperous future for both India and Zambia, and sets the stage for further cooperation in various fields of defence.
