The Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Prahari, a specialized Pollution Control Vessel, is currently undertaking an overseas mission to ASEAN nations from September 11th to October 14th, 2023. This deployment is a vital component of India’s ASEAN initiatives for Marine Pollution Response, showcasing the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) Pollution Response capabilities and its unwavering commitment to tackling marine pollution challenges while bolstering regional capacity.

This vessel is equipped with a Chetak Helicopter configured for Pollution Response, significantly enhancing its capabilities in this critical area. The launch of this mission was announced by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh during the ASEAN Defence Minister Meeting Plus in Cambodia in November 2022.

Throughout this overseas deployment, the ship is scheduled to make port calls in prominent locations such as Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, and Jakarta. These visits will serve as demonstrations of the ICG’s prowess in pollution response and its dedication to collaborative efforts in addressing marine pollution challenges.

As part of an international exchange program, the ship has welcomed aboard 13 NCC cadets who are actively participating in the “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan.” This initiative focuses on international outreach programs centered around beach clean-ups and similar activities, conducted in coordination with partner nations.

This visit holds immense significance in strengthening bilateral ties with key maritime agencies, including the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre and BAKAMLA (Indonesia Maritime Security Agency). These relationships have evolved over the years, with a shared commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and cleanliness of the seas within the region. Engagements with senior officials and personnel from these agencies during the visit will further contribute to enhancing regional safety and security.

The visit’s agenda includes professional exchanges, cross-deck visits, planning and tabletop exercises, joint maneuvers, as well as official and social interactions, including visits to facilities aimed at capacity-building.

The deployment of ICGS Samudra Prahari to ASEAN countries underscores India’s unwavering efforts to nurture friendly relations through maritime cooperation. This aligns seamlessly with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of “SAGAR – Security and Growth for All in the Region,” aimed at fostering unity within the region. It also resonates with the Indian government’s theme during its G20 Presidency: “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – One Earth, One Family, One Future.
