In a historic moment for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari will unveil a new ensign on October 8, 2023, a symbol that will encapsulate the valour and heritage of the IAF.

It will be in the presence of Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, and the General Officer in Commanding (GO-in-C) of Central Air Command (CAC), Air Marshal, RGK Kapoor at the Air Force Day Parade at Bamrauli, Prayagraj.

A Journey Through History:

The IAF’s ensign has evolved over the years, reflecting the changing times and the spirit of an independent India. In its early days, the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) ensign featured the Union Jack in the upper left canton and the RIAF roundel (Red, White & Blue) on the fly side. However, following India’s independence, the ensign underwent a transformation. The Union Jack made way for the Indian tricolour, and the RAF roundels were replaced by the IAF tri-colour roundel in the lower right canton.

A Symbol of Transformation:

Now, a new IAF ensign has been crafted to better represent the values and ethos of the Indian Air Force. The most significant change is the inclusion of the Air Force Crest in the top right corner of the ensign, toward the fly side.

The IAF Crest:

According to the official statement issued by the Indian Air Force on Saturday (Oct 7, 2023), the IAF Crest is a powerful emblem that tells the story of the IAF’s dedication and commitment to the nation. At its zenith stands the national symbol, the Ashoka lion, with the words “सत्यमेव जयते” in Devanagari beneath it. This phrase, meaning “Truth Alone Triumphs,” has deep historical and philosophical significance, resonating with India’s commitment to truth and righteousness.

Beneath the Ashoka lion, one finds a Himalayan eagle with its wings outstretched, symbolizing the indomitable spirit and fighting qualities of the IAF. A light blue ring surrounds the Himalayan eagle, bearing the words “भारतीय वायु सेना,” which translate to “Indian Air Force.” This reinforces the IAF’s identity as a guardian of Indian skies.

A Motto That Soars:

Beneath the Himalayan eagle, in golden Devanagari script, is the IAF’s motto: “नभः स्पृशं दीप्तम्,” taken from verse 24, Chapter 11 of the Bhagavad Gita. This powerful motto translates to “Radiant Thou Touchest Heaven” or, in essence, “Touching the Sky with Glory.” It encapsulates the IAF’s relentless pursuit of excellence and its dedication to reaching new heights.

A New Chapter Begins:

As the IAF unveils its new ensign, it signifies not just a change in symbolism but a reaffirmation of the IAF’s commitment to the values it upholds and the mission it serves. This ensign represents a new chapter in the IAF’s illustrious history, one that will continue to be written with courage, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.

The new IAF ensign is not just a flag; it is a testament to the IAF’s enduring legacy and its unwavering determination to protect the skies and uphold the principles enshrined in its symbol.
