In a first-ever trans-oceanic sortie undertaken by Indian women in a double-handed mode Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini embarked on a historic expedition from the INS Mandovi, Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius on Feb 28, 2024.

This expedition according to the Indian Navy is being conducted under the aegis of Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA).

Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A are embarking on a historic journey, displaying the strength of women in the sea. They are sailing on INSV Tarini, showing the skill of Indian Navy women and the country’s dedication to fairness for all genders in fields dominated by men.

Their trip is vital preparation for their upcoming voyage around the world, planned for later this year. They’ve spent two and a half years preparing after a tough selection process. Previously, they sailed from Goa to Mauritius and back in 2022, then from Goa to Rio De Janeiro via Cape Town and back last year. They also sailed from Goa to Port Blair and back in double-handed mode. This expedition is their final practice before the circumnavigation in September.

Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), KC, NM, a renowned yachtsman who has sailed around the world twice without stopping, flagged off the expedition. He has been mentoring the two officers for six months and expressed pride in launching this significant journey. He said it represents the adventurous spirit and resilience of the Indian Navy and showed full confidence in the officers’ abilities, wishing them good weather and safe travels.

The INSV Tarini’s journey across oceans marks India’s growing role in global maritime activities and its commitment to gender equality at sea. It demonstrates the Indian Navy’s dedication to excellence and diversity.
