Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports identifies India as the fifth largest market for inbound tourism. This growth is largely due to Thailand’s visa-free policy for Indian travelers, recently extended until November 11, 2024. The availability of many non-stop daily flights also contributes to this trend.
Recent data from Airbnb shows a substantial increase in bookings by Indian guests in Thailand between 2022 and 2023. The number of bookings rose by more than 60 percent year-on-year. There was a notable spike during the Holi and Easter long weekends, with searches for stays in Thailand up by over 200 percent.
India’s younger generation, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are driving this increase in travel. In 2023, these groups accounted for 80 percent of bookings by Indian guests on Airbnb. Given that India has the highest population of Gen Zs and Millennials globally, this demographic’s travel enthusiasm is significant.
Popular destinations in Thailand for Indian guests include Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Samui. Indian travelers favor stays categorized as Pool, Tropical, Near a beach, Near a national park, and Iconic city.
Duo and Solo travelers are the largest groups booking stays, but small groups (3-5 people) and medium-sized groups (5+ people) are growing fastest, increasing by around 67 percent and 68 percent year-on-year in 2023.
Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, highlighted that Indian travelers are not only visiting popular destinations but also exploring lesser-known areas in Thailand. This trend promotes inclusive tourism, spreading economic benefits beyond major cities.
The Thai government’s extended visa waiver is expected to further boost tourism from India. Airbnb remains committed to supporting Thailand’s tourism efforts and keeping the country top of mind for Indian travelers.
