In a significant gesture of respect, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army, is preparing for a visit to Muktinath Temple in Nepal this week. Located in the Mustang District, Muktinath is a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindu and Buddhist devotees. During this visit, General Dwivedi is expected to pay tribute to General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), whose legacy is commemorated at the temple.

In February 2023, a memorial bell was installed at Muktinath in honour of General Rawat, who tragically passed away in a helicopter crash in December 2021. The Gen Rawat Bell is not merely a symbol; it is a tribute to his visionary leadership, his contributions to India’s defence forces, and his pivotal role in strengthening the defence cooperation between India and Nepal. This bell stands as a lasting reminder of the deep respect between the two nations, whose military ties have been built on trust and shared values.

The installation of the bell was an emotional moment during the visit of four former Indian Army Chiefs—General (Retd) Vishwa Nath Sharma, General (Retd) JJ Singh, General (Retd) Deepak Kapoor, and General (Retd) Dalbir Singh Suhag. These distinguished officers had travelled to Nepal to attend the 260th Nepali Army Day celebrations and the Chiefs Conclave, further underscoring the close relationship between the Indian and Nepali militaries.

For Indian pilgrims who visit Muktinath, the bell serves as a poignant reminder of General Rawat’s service and dedication to both his country and his vision for strengthening international defence collaborations. The bell also symbolizes the unbreakable bond between India and Nepal, reflecting the mutual respect and cultural ties that have existed for centuries.

General Dwivedi’s upcoming visit to the temple represents a continuation of General Rawat’s enduring legacy. It is a moment for reflection on the shared history and the sacrifices made by both countries’ armed forces. This visit also highlights India’s continued commitment to enhancing its defence and cultural partnerships with Nepal, reinforcing the friendship between the two nations.

The Gen Rawat Bell at Muktinath stands as a powerful symbol of the deep-rooted friendship between India and Nepal, embodying their shared history, respect, and mutual aspirations for peace and security.
