India and South Korea’s mutual partnership continues to strengthen, says External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during his visit to South Korea.

Highlighting the need to explore new avenues of collaboration, Jaishankar mentioned India’s interest in expanding cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, semiconductors, green hydrogen, and nuclear sectors.

Recalling the elevation of bilateral ties to a special strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in 2015, the minister underscored the importance of upholding this relationship. The 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties celebrated in 2023 further highlighted the enduring bond between the two nations.

Leading the 10th India-South Korea Joint Commission Meeting alongside his counterpart Cho Tae-Yul, Jaishankar extended congratulations on Cho Tae-yul’s appointment as South Korea‘s Minister of Foreign Affairs. He stressed the need to broaden cooperation beyond traditional areas into sectors like critical technologies, semiconductors, and green hydrogen.

Reflecting on the discussions between Prime Minister Modi and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in 2023, Jaishankar expressed confidence in their guidance for future collaboration. The focus on the Indo-Pacific region emerged as a common ground, highlighting both countries’ stake in regional stability and prosperity.

During his visit, Jaishankar engaged in discussions with South Korea’s Trade, Industry, and Energy Minister Ahn Dukgeun, focusing on enhancing economic cooperation. He also met with representatives from South Korea’s think tanks to explore further exchanges and collaborations.

Furthermore, he held discussions with Director of National Security Chang Ho-jin, focusing on shared interests in the Indo-Pacific and addressing contemporary regional and global challenges.

The Ministry of External Affairs’ official statement underlined the expansive nature of the India-South Korea Special Strategic Partnership, encompassing trade, investments, defense, education, science, and culture. The Joint Commission Meeting aimed to comprehensively review bilateral cooperation and identify opportunities for further strengthening the relationship.
