In a landmark move for both the UAE’s defence sector and the global radar technology market, EDGE, a leading advanced technology and defence group, and Indra Sistemas, a global leader in information technology and defence systems, have formalized a joint venture agreement. The new venture, named PULSE, will focus on the design, manufacturing, and integration of next-generation radar systems, positioning itself as a key player in the global defence landscape.

The agreement, signed in Madrid in the presence of Spain’s Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, represents a deepening collaboration between the two companies. It aligns with EDGE’s strategic vision of expanding sovereign capabilities and Indra’s “Leading the Future” initiative, which aims to advance innovation in defence technologies. The creation of PULSE not only strengthens their partnership but also sets the stage for a significant leap in radar system capabilities, with the UAE emerging as a hub for cutting-edge radar technology.

A Strategic Partnership

EDGE, which has quickly established itself as a powerhouse in advanced defence technologies, and Indra, renowned for its expertise in information technology and defence systems, have joined forces to address the growing demand for advanced radar systems worldwide. This partnership is rooted in shared goals: to enhance global security, foster technological innovation, and build local capabilities in the UAE.

Hamad Al Marar, EDGE’s Managing Director and CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about the joint venture, highlighting the importance of PULSE in advancing global defence technologies. “The establishment of PULSE marks a transformative milestone in advancing the global defence landscape by delivering state-of-the-art radar systems,” said Al Marar. He emphasized that the venture is not only about enhancing operational capabilities but also about fostering stability in key regions through technology transfer and collaboration.

Indra’s Chairman, Marc Murtra, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the collaboration will enable both companies to tap into the growing demand for next-generation radar technologies. “This agreement, in partnership with EDGE, will provide next-generation radar systems…This is an important step that will enable Indra to expand its global footprint and develop our valued relationship with EDGE,” Murtra said.

Focus on Innovation and Local Capability Building

The joint venture will be headquartered in Abu Dhabi, with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility dedicated to producing advanced radar systems. The facility will also serve as a hub for research and development (R&D), aimed at enhancing local expertise and building a skilled workforce.

PULSE will focus on not only the design and manufacture of radars but also the integration and maintenance of these systems, ensuring the long-term sustainability and technological growth of the radar industry in the UAE. The venture’s capabilities will span various radar technologies, providing solutions for air, land, and maritime domains.

Both companies are committed to building R&D infrastructure, including advanced laboratories and testing facilities. This will enable PULSE to stay at the forefront of radar innovation, developing cutting-edge technologies and collaborating with leading experts in the field. Additionally, the company plans to implement specialized training programs aimed at upskilling Emirati professionals, ensuring a sustainable and highly skilled workforce.

Expanding Sovereign Capabilities

The joint venture is also a key part of EDGE’s broader vision to enhance the UAE’s sovereign defence capabilities. By increasing local radar production capacity, PULSE will not only provide the UAE with state-of-the-art radar systems but also contribute to the country’s broader goals of self-reliance and technological independence.

Hamad Al Marar noted that the collaboration represents an important step toward positioning the UAE as a global hub for radar innovation. “By investing in advanced production facilities, we are positioning the UAE as a global hub for radar innovation, shaping the future of defence technology across air, land, and maritime domains,” he said. This investment in advanced manufacturing and R&D infrastructure will allow the UAE to play a pivotal role in the global defence technology market.

Future Prospects and Global Reach

PULSE’s creation is not just about meeting regional needs but also about tapping into high-potential international markets. The joint venture will benefit from preferential rights over any radar orders awarded to Indra or EDGE, both now and in the future. This positions PULSE as a strategic player in the global radar market, with significant opportunities to expand its footprint in international defence programs.

Indra’s CEO, José Vicente de los Mozos, highlighted that the new factory in Abu Dhabi will be equipped with the latest technologies to meet the anticipated demand for advanced radar systems. “In Abu Dhabi, we plan to create a new state-of-the-art factory with the most sophisticated technology, prepared to respond to the high anticipated demand for the most innovative radar systems in the coming years,” de los Mozos said.
