Banks will remain closed on April 10 as various cities observe Mahavir Jayanti. According to the RBI holiday list banking outlets will be closed in Ahmedabad, Aizwal, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur and Ranchi. Banks in other parts of the country will continue their operations as per normal on Thursday.
Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated annually by members of the Jain community to mark the birth of Lord Mahavira — the twenty-fourth and last Tīrthaṅkara. Jain texts suggest that he was born on the thirteenth day of the bright half of the moon in the month of Chaitra in the year 599 BCE. As per the Gregorian calendar the festival typically falls in the month of March or April every year.
