Banks across India will remain closed for 21 days in October 2026 due to major festivals, regional occasions, and national holidays. Banks typically remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, as well as on all Sundays. Most importantly the banks are shut across India on October  2.

However, the holiday schedule varies from state to state, so customers are advised to plan their visits and banking transactions accordingly.

Multiple holidays lined up for Durga Puja and Diwali

There will be nationwide bank closures on 6 days out of 30 in April. This includes a national holiday on Oct 2 and well as the usual weekend holidays. The month begins with Navratri and Durga Puja festivities. Banks in several states will remain closed in the first week of October.

On October 1, banks in multiple cities, including Agartala, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Itanagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, and Thiruvananthapuram, will be closed on the occasion of Navratri ends.

On October 2, banks across India will remain shut on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti along with Dasara.

Banks in Gangtok, Sikkim, will remain closed on October 3 and October 4 for Durga Puja (Dasain).

Banks to remain closed on October 6 and 7 for regional festivals

On October 6, banks will remain shut in some regions (Agartala and Kolkata) for Lakshmi Puja, followed by Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima on October 7, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh and Shimla.

Diwali, Bhai Dooj and Chitragupt Jayanti mark consecutive holiday

Diwali celebrations will bring another round of closures in the second half of the month. Kali Puja, Naraka Chaturdashi, and Diwali (Deepavali) will be observed between October 20 and October 22. The following days, October 23 and 24, will also see bank holidays in many states for Bhai Dooj, Chitragupt Jayanti, and related festivals.

Kati Bihu, Chhath Puja to shut banks in select states

Apart from pan-India festivals, October will also mark regional holidays. Kati Bihu will be observed in Assam on October 18, while Chhath Puja will lead to bank closures on October 27 and 28 in states like Kolkata, Patna and Ranchi.

On October 31, banks in Ahmedabad, Gujarat will remain closed to mark Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary.

Online services will be available

With multiple consecutive holidays during Durga Puja and Diwali weeks, customers are advised to complete cash withdrawals, cheque clearances, and other essential transactions beforehand. Customers are also advised to check the state-wise holiday list before planning transactions and physical visit to the banks. Online banking and mobile banking services will remain available as usual.
