Bank Holiday January 2025: Today marks the festival of Lohri, a holiday celebrated in northern states like Punjab and Haryana. Will banks remain closed today? As outlined in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, banks across the country will remain open today, Monday, and all public and private banks will function as usual.

However, several states will have bank holidays on January 14, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. 

Earlier, the RBI had released the bank holiday schedule for the month of January. The month has a total of 13 bank holidays including public holidays, regional holidays, and regular closures on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays. January includes festivals like New Year’s Day, Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday and Makar Sankranti. Even as the banks will remain closed on these days, customers can access banking services via net banking, ATMs, mobile applications, and bank websites. 

Meanwhile, on January 14, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti/ Uttarayana Punyakala/ Pongal/ Maghe Sankranti/ Magh Bihu/ Birthday of Hazarat Ali, banks will stay shut in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad – Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad – Telangana, Itanagar, Kanpur and Lucknow.

Local Schedules

RBI classifies holidays into three categories: Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday, Banks’ Closing of Accounts Holiday, and Holidays Under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. During state-specific festivals, the banks remain shut only in those states, while during national festivals, banks stay closed across the country. 

Here is a look at the dates of the January 2025 bank holidays across regions.

January 1 (Wednesday): New Year’s Day/Loosong/Namsoong – Banks will stay shut in Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata and Shillong on the first day of the year.

January 2 (Thursday): Loosong/Namsoong/New Year Celebration – Banks will be closed in Aizawl and Gangtok.

January 6 (Monday): Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday – Banks will remain non-operational in Chandigarh.

January 11 (Saturday): Missionary Day/Imoinu Iratpa – Banks will be closed in Aizawl and Imphal.

January 14 (Tuesday): Makar Sankranti/Uttarayana Punyakala/Pongal/Maghe Sankranti/Magh Bihu/Birthday of Hazarat Ali – Banks will stay shut in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad – Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad – Telangana, Itanagar, Kanpur and Lucknow.

January 15 (Wednesday): Thiruvalluvar Day – Banks will remain non-operational in Chennai.

January 16 (Thursday): Uzhavar Thirunal – Banks will be shut in Chennai.

January 23 (Thursday): Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose/Vir Surendrasai Jayanti – Banks will stay shut in Agartala, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata.
