The Mumbai International Airport reported a 7.2% increase in passenger traffic in the June quarter, with 13.46 million travellers passing through its gates. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2023-24, the airport handled 12.49 million passengers, according to a statement from Mumbai International Airport Ltd.

“This (June) quarter recorded over 13.4 million total passengers travelling through Chhatrapati Maharaj International Airport, with 3.7 million travelling internationally and 9.7 million travelling on domestic routes,” the statement read.

Witnessing steady month-on-month growth, the quarter began with 4.3 million passengers in April, marking a strong start. Passenger traffic increased to 4.7 million in May, a month-on-month rise of 7.9 per cent. In June, Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) handled 4.39 million passengers, demonstrating sustained demand for air travel from Mumbai.

Air traffic movements, top destinations and leading airlines

During the quarter, the airport recorded 59,775 domestic air traffic movements (ATMs) and 21,519 international ATMs, marking a surge of over 4 per cent compared to Q1 FY 2023-24. Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad emerged as the top three domestic destinations, with over 6.9 million passengers travelling through the airport.

Dubai, Singapore, and London remained the top three international destinations, with Dubai leading as the preferred international destination, attracting over 0.61 million passengers from Mumbai International Airport this quarter. Passenger traffic from the top five international destinations exceeded 1.5 million, while the top three domestic destinations saw more than 3.4 million passengers.

IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara emerged as the top airlines with the highest market share in both domestic and international sectors. IndiGo led the domestic market with over 50 percent market share, handling a total of 4.99 million passengers in the recent quarter.

The Middle East, Asia Pacific, and European regions experienced the most traffic to and from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The Middle Eastern region recorded 49 percent of passenger traffic in April 2024 and 47 percent in May and June, according to MIAL.
