Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that proposed water taxi services would connect various parts of Mumbai to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport in just 17 minutes. Speaking at a poll rally in Thane on Sunday, he emphasised how the initiative could significantly cut travel time and alleviate traffic congestion in the Mumbai metropolitan region.

Gadkari revealed that jetties have already been constructed near the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is slated to commence operations by March 2025. “By harnessing the vast sea routes around Mumbai and Thane, we can significantly reduce traffic congestion and air pollution,” he said.

Gadkari hints on possibility of introducing amphibious sea planes

He also discussed introducing amphibious sea planes capable of landing in smaller water bodies, including lakes in Thane, to further enhance connectivity without requiring traditional runways.

Highlighting innovative solutions for urban and intercity travel, the minister spoke about the New Delhi-Mumbai expressway, which is expected to ease traffic within Mumbai and Pune by diverting outstation vehicles.

Gadkari also detailed plans for an advanced intercity electric bus service. These 18-meter-long electric buses, seating up to 135 passengers, promise a flight-like experience and can travel 40 kilometers on a quick 30-second charge.

The government is actively engaging with investors to develop these transformative projects, signaling a shift towards renewable energy and cutting-edge transportation technologies. The announcements come ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for November 20.
