One flight was diverted and several others were delayed due to poor visibility caused by dense fog in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on Tuesday (January 14) morning, an official reported. Visibility around Birsa Munda Airport was below 1,000 meters until 9:30 am, according to airport director RR Maurya.

“Due to poor visibility, one flight was diverted, and several others were holding overhead till 9.30 am,” Maurya said, noting that visibility remained below 1,000 meters. On a typical day, the airport handles the arrival and departure of five flights by 9:30 am.

“Only a Kolkata-Ranchi flight arrived, while three others were holding overhead,” he said. 

The Ranchi Meteorological Centre had predicted fog in the morning, followed by partial cloud cover later in the day. The minimum visibility requirement for flight landing is 1,200 meters, the official confirmed.
