The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has issued an advisory banning the use of lantern kites, wish kites, and hot air balloons within a two-kilometre radius of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi. This precautionary measure comes ahead of the Diwali festival, a time when the use of such objects significantly increases, raising concerns over the safety of aircraft operations and passengers.
The advisory, accessed by ANI, highlights the potential risks posed by lantern kites and hot air balloons to aircraft during critical phases of flight such as landing and takeoff. The document notes that both commercial and residential areas near the airport are prone to the use of these kites, especially during festive seasons, which could pose a serious threat to aviation safety.
The order follows suggestions from MoCA to ensure the protection of human lives and aircraft operations at IGI Airport. In response, the Delhi Police, through the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Palam (IGI Airport), has issued an official prohibition on the use of lantern kites and similar airborne objects within the designated two-kilometre perimeter. The police order aims to mitigate the risk of these objects interfering with aircraft, given that there are currently no specific laws in place to regulate such activities.
Why is the ban essential?
The advisory states that this ban is essential to avoid any potential hazards, particularly during the festive season, when kite flying and the release of lanterns are more common. The order is effective from October 21 and will remain in place until December 19.
The advisory also warns that violators, including individuals, event organizers, commercial or private institution owners, and residents of nearby areas, will face legal consequences under Section 223 (a) of the BNS. Those found contravening the ban will be subject to penalties as part of efforts to maintain safety and reduce the nuisance caused by airborne objects near the airport.
This timely intervention by MoCA and local authorities is expected to prevent accidents and ensure smooth operations at IGI Airport, one of India’s busiest air traffic hubs, particularly during the festive season when such risks are elevated.
