Kolkata Airport conducted a technical session to train air traffic controllers from airports in the eastern region on handling situations caused by spoofing. The workshop was held as spoofing poses a high risk for passengers and crew during flights.
What does spoofing mean?
Spoofing means disguising a communication from an unknown source as one from a dependable source. As per the statement released by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), the session was based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Frequency Interference.
What does GNSS do?
GNSS is a network of satellites that provides orbital information and broadcast timing and assists in positioning and navigating the aircraft. The AAI further elaborated on the significance and safety benefits of using GNSS in Air Traffic Management operations and aircraft navigation.
”GNSS jamming or possible spoofing, which has been experienced in some areas, may hamper the ATC (Air Traffic Control) functioning and misguide flights too,” the statement stated. The training session was organized by Mahua B Adhikary, General Manager, Air Traffic Management of Easter Region. GNSS is widely used worldwide as well in India.
