India is preparing to extend its Digi Yatra facial-recognition technology, currently available for domestic travelers, to international passengers. This enhancement aims to streamline security and immigration processes at airports, reducing wait times and easing passenger movement.
Currently, domestic passengers can use the Digi Yatra app, which requires Aadhaar registration for a seamless travel experience. The system’s integration into international travel will involve e-passport enrollment, broadening its accessibility to foreign citizens.
Additionally, former Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had hinted at the potential expansion of the facility to international passengers earlier this year in February.
“As we have got the learnings from Digi Yatra, we are also looking at extending it to international passengers, but the complexities there are different. We have to make sure that we coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, because the concept of e-passport and e-visa, all of that has to be built on this platform,” the former aviation minister had said.
“Therefore, we are working on it as we speak. All I can tell you is that we are committed to extending it laterally as well as deepening it domestically to other airports as well,” he had stated.
What is Digi Yatra initiative?
The Digi Yatra initiative, launched by the Digi Yatra Foundation under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, employs biometric technology to expedite airport procedures. This strategic initiative aligns with the government’s goal of creating a more inclusive system for both domestic and foreign passengers.
Govt plans to expand Digi Yatra facility
Presently operational at 13 domestic airports, the Digi Yatra facility will be introduced to 14 additional airports by March this year. New locations include Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Dabolim, Mopa Goa, Indore, Bagdogra, Chandigarh, Ranchi, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Srinagar, and Vishakhapatnam. The government plans further expansion to 11 more airports in 2025, reflecting a commitment to modernize and enhance passenger experience.
Usage and impact of Digi Yatra
Since its inception, the Digi Yatra app has significantly reduced processing times at entry and boarding gates. Data from December 2022 to November 2023 shows a marked increase in app usage and effectiveness, highlighting its role in simplifying airport operations.
With the upcoming integration for international passengers, the Digi Yatra project aims to offer a smoother, faster airport experience globally, aligning with the government’s vision of an inclusive and efficient air travel system.
