When booking a flight, passengers often expect a seamless travel experience. However, unforeseen circumstances such as overbooking, denied boarding, and flight cancellations can disrupt travel plans. To protect passengers, airlines are required to adhere to specific compensation policies in such situations. The following scenarios outline the conditions under which compensation is provided, ensuring passengers are fairly treated when their travel plans are affected.

Let’s take a look at the compensations passengers are entitled to in different scenarios.

Case 1: Denied Boarding

Scenario: The airline has overbooked a flight.

Compensation: The airline should ask for volunteers to give up their seats in exchange for benefits.

Scenario: A passenger is denied boarding despite having a confirmed booking.

Compensation: No compensation is to be provided if the airline arranges an alternate flight within 1 hour of the original departure time.

Scenario: A passenger is denied boarding despite having a confirmed booking.

Compensation: If the alternate flight is arranged within 24 hours of the original departure time: The airline must compensate 200% of the one-way fare plus fuel charges (up to a maximum of Rs. 10,000/-).

If the alternate flight is arranged more than 24 hours after the original departure time: The airline must compensate 400% of the one-way fare plus fuel charges (up to a maximum of Rs. 20,000/-).

If the passenger opts not to take the alternate flight: The airline must provide a full refund and compensate 400% of the one-way fare plus fuel charges (up to a maximum of Rs. 20,000/-).

Case 2: Flight cancellation

Scenario: The airline anticipates a flight cancellation.

Compensation: The airline must inform the passengers and arrange an alternate flight at least two weeks in advance.

Scenario: The airline cancels a flight less than two weeks before and up to 24 hours before the booked departure time.

Compensation: The airline must arrange an alternate flight within 2 hours of the original departure time or provide a full refund of the ticket.

Scenario: The airline cancels a flight less than 24 hours before the booked departure time.

Compensation: The airline must refund the ticket and provide compensation as follows:

For a block time of less than 1 hour: Compensation equals the one-way fare plus fuel charges (up to a maximum of Rs. 5,000/-).

For a block time between 1 hour and 2 hours: Compensation equals the one-way fare plus fuel charges (up to a maximum of Rs. 7,500/-).

For a block time of more than 2 hours: Compensation equals the one-way fare plus fuel charges (up to a maximum of Rs. 10,000/-).

However, if an airline cancels a flight due to unforeseeable, exceptional events (force majeure events) then they are free of any obligation.
