British Airways has suspended one of its pilots for “breaching anti-terror laws” and risking the lives of passengers as well as crew after taking off from London. The pilot reportedly justified his actions by saying he wanted his family to watch him operate the flight, according to a report by The Sun. His family was on board the flight from London to New York

‘Passengers felt incredibly uneasy’

The outlet further reported that crew and passengers felt “incredibly uneasy” due to his stunt, and flagged the incident with the airline.

“Crew and passengers immediately noticed the cockpit door was open and wanted to know what was happening. It made passengers incredibly uneasy,” The Sun quoted a source as saying.

The source added, “The door was wide open for a significant time, enough for people to worry and comment. BA colleagues were so alarmed that the pilot was reported in the US, and bosses had to suspend him.”

An investigation into the case has been launched, and the return flight was cancelled. The passengers were offered alternative flights from New York to London.

The outlet further reported that since the 9/11 attacks on the US, security has been beefed up, and it is mandatory to keep the doors of the cockpit locked.

‘Safety is our top priority’: Airline

The airline, in a statement, said that its topmost priority is the safety of passengers as well as of crew members.

“Safety and security are our top priority,” British Airways said, adding that the suspension of the pilot was in line with company policy.

It added, “Allegations of this nature are always fully investigated.”
