The Centre has sanctioned a security cover of over 150 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel for the Ayodhya airport, including anti-terrorist and anti-sabotage measures. This development comes just days before the high-profile consecration ceremony at the Ram temple on January 22.

The Maharishi Valmiki International Airport is the 68th civil airport terminal to fall under the jurisdiction of the specialized Aviation Security Group (ASG) of the CISF. CISF personnel will be responsible for frisking passengers, checking baggage, and securing the perimeter of the airport facility.

Phased Security Enhancement

An armed contingent of more than 150 CISF personnel, led by a deputy commandant-rank officer, has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This security deployment is set to be enhanced in phases over the 821-acre land allocated for the Ayodhya airport.

Threat Perception and Professional Security

Given the perceived threat to the facility serving as the air gateway to pilgrims and visitors, a review by central security and intelligence agencies recommended a professional security cover, leading to the deployment of CISF personnel.

Ayodhya Airport: Future Expansion Plans

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia outlined the gradual expansion of the airport, stating that the initial phase will cover 65,000 square feet and accommodate two to three flights every hour. Plans include constructing a 2,200-metre runway, enabling the landing of aircraft like Boeing 737 and Airbus 319/320.

Second Phase and International Connectivity

Scindia highlighted the approval-seeking process for the second phase, which aims to increase the runway length from 2,2000 metres to 3,7000 metres. This expansion will facilitate the landing of international aircraft like Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 in Ayodhya.

Comprehensive Security Mandate

The CISF’s involvement in guarding civil airports traces back to the aftermath of the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814. The agency has been entrusted with ensuring the security of airports across the country since that incident.
