In response to a surge in bomb hoax threats targeting airlines, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has announced that additional security checks have been implemented at airports across the country. Despite the heightened vigilance, Naidu reassured passengers that efforts are being made to minimise disruptions to their travel plans, particularly during the ongoing festive season.
The minister confirmed that over 100 bomb threats have been received by Indian airlines within the past week, leading to the diversion of eight flights. While the threats have all been false alarms, Naidu emphasised the seriousness of the situation. “It is a sensitive matter, and we cannot afford to ignore any threat,” he stated. He added that a private network had been used to post the threats on social media, and agencies under the supervision of the Ministry of Home Affairs are actively working to track down the perpetrators.
To further address the issue, Naidu revealed that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is recommending amendments to the Aircraft Security Rules, which would include placing individuals responsible for bomb hoaxes on the no-flying list. Additionally, proposed changes to the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Civil Aviation Act are expected to strengthen the legal framework and deter future incidents.
In response to concerns about passenger safety, Naidu assured the public that all international safety protocols are being followed. Security measures, such as a 10 per cent increase in surveillance, are now in place at key airports. These enhanced measures include reviewing baggage X-ray images and carefully inspecting passenger checklists for flights that have received specific threats.
In coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is actively monitoring the situation. A senior official from BCAS confirmed that they are in regular contact with airlines, keeping them updated on developments. The official also acknowledged that while the situation has caused some inconvenience to travellers, airlines remain fully supportive of the enhanced security protocols.
Despite the challenges posed by the bomb hoaxes, Naidu reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of passengers without adding to their inconvenience. By improving security measures and updating relevant legislation, authorities hope to put an end to these disruptive threats.
