Passengers on an Air India flight from Chicago to Delhi on Thursday had to return to Chicago due to a technical issue, an airline spokesperson confirmed on Monday. The spokesperson stated that alternative arrangements were promptly made to ensure passengers reached their destination. Additionally, full refunds were provided for cancellations, along with complimentary rescheduling options.

“AI126 operating Chicago to Delhi on 6 March 2025 air-returned to Chicago due to a technical issue. Upon landing at Chicago, all passengers and crew disembarked normally and have been provided with accommodation to minimise inconvenience,” the spokesperson said.

“Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destination. In addition, full refunds on cancellation and complimentary rescheduling are also being offered to passengers if opted by them. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew remain top priority,” the spokesperson added.

Passengers on Air India Flight 126 endured a 10-hour ordeal after nearly all onboard toilets became inoperable, forcing the aircraft to return to Chicago.

The flight, en route to Delhi on March 5, was over Greenland when 11 out of its 12 lavatories malfunctioned, leaving approximately 300 passengers with access to just one toilet in the business class section, The New York Post reported.

The issue surfaced five hours into the 14-hour journey, prompting the airline to divert back to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Some passengers claimed they faced difficulties in rescheduling their flights or securing refunds.

According to aviation regulations, even one or two clogged toilets can warrant an unscheduled landing due to limited onboard facilities.
