Economic crashes terrify most people as markets fall and jobs disappear. However, Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, has time and again said that crashes are not disasters but opportunities. According to him, the difference between becoming poorer or richer often begins with something very simple. It is the words people use.

‘How to get richer as economy crashes’

In his post titled, “How to get richer as the economy crashes,” Kiyosaki said, reflecting on a lesson he learnt in Sunday school. “Control your words. In Sunday school, I learned: ‘The word became flesh and dwelt amongst us’.”

Kiyosaki explained that, in simple terms, people eventually become what they repeatedly say. The 78-year-old author noted that his “rich dad” did not allow him to say phrases like “I can’t afford it”.

“Rich dad said: Poor people say, ‘I can’t afford it… become poor and remain poor… just because they do not control their words.’,” he further wrote in his post.

His “poor dad”, on the other hand, frequently used to say that he “can’t afford it”, and since your words become who you are, he “remained poor all his life” despite earning money. But why? Well, because he did not merely state a fact when he spoke. He, at the same time, trained his brain to stop searching for solutions. The words sort of become a mental full stop.

Kiyosaki then revealed what “rich dad” taught him instead. “‘How can I afford it’ which opened our minds to find ways to afford things we needed….ultimately making us richer and richer, because we learned how to solve bigger and bigger money challenges.”

He added that market crashes often create buying opportunities as assets go on sale due to panic selling. He went on to talk about the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, where real estate, stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, and even gold and silver were sold at steep discounts.

“Panic sellers were dumping great real estate properties, paper assets such as stocks, ETFs Mutual Funds….even gold and silver went on sale. The last GFC was a great time to get rich…. If you could control your words.”

‘Control your words’

“Choose the words you think and speak…,” he warned, before stressing on doing so “carefully”.

Kiyosaki then quoted a verse from the Bible – “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep a watch at the door of my lips.”

He ended his long post by reminding readers that even though “words are free”, their impact can be powerful.

“A great time to get richer and richer is here,” his social media post ended with these words.
