Fleet modernisation

Air India’s narrowbody aircraft modernisation is progressing well and will be completed by mid-2025. Meanwhile, the airline’s legacy Boeing 787 fleet will undergo a retrofit of new seats and entertainment systems, beginning in April 2025, with upgraded aircraft returning to service in October 2025. Two to three B787s will be inducted per month until all 27 legacy aircraft are upgraded.

The retrofit of Air India’s Boeing 777 fleet, originally scheduled for 2025, has been delayed to early 2026 due to production constraints. However, interim interior refurbishments will take place in 2025 to enhance the passenger experience.

Temporary service suspensions

Meanwhile, due to the retrofit programme and a temporary reduction in operational fleet capacity, Air India has decided to suspend operation in the following routes:

Mumbai-Melbourne: Suspended from March 30 to September 13, 2025.

Kochi-London Gatwick: Suspended from March 30, 2025, until further notice.

Despite these suspensions, Air India will maintain 12x weekly flights to London Gatwick from Amritsar, Ahmedabad, and Goa.
