The Centre has allocated Rs 1,071.05 crore to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Union Budget for 2025-26, as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday. This marks a modest increase of Rs 84.12 crore from the current fiscal year.

In the 2024-25 Budget Estimates, the agency was initially allocated Rs 951.46 crore, later revised to Rs 986.93 crore.

The new allocation of Rs 1,071.05 crore for 2025-26 is primarily earmarked for establishment-related expenses of the CBI, which handles investigations and prosecutions related to corruption cases involving public servants, private individuals, firms, and other serious crimes.

The allocation also covers various projects, including the modernization of CBI training centers, the creation of technical and forensic support units, comprehensive modernization efforts, land acquisitions, and the construction of office and residential buildings for the agency.

The CBI is tasked with addressing emerging crime trends, such as those involving artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and the darknet, alongside traditional crimes like bank loan frauds and high-profile extradition cases in foreign courts. The agency also manages criminal cases referred by states, high courts, and the Supreme Court.
