The blasts which killed over 100 persons in Karachi, during Mrs Bhutto?s return, underscore the threat from maniacal terrorism. The Indian team?s procession in Bombay after the Twenty20 triumph was also a major security error. This is not Latin America, where the passion for football, music, dance and beer reign supreme. In South Asia, the greed for power and the hunger for vengeance reign supreme.

PN pinch
Sebi?s proposal to check the flow of participatory notes (?Sebi to ban participatory notes?, Oct 17) to India is good. Till now, the identity of many foreign investors who used the PN route was unknown. The small domestic investor needed a PAN card to invest but the large foreign investor pumping money into India through PN required not even disclosure of identity. This secretive practice turned out to be unhealthy for capital markets. The clampdown on PN should, however, not deter serious foreign investors who are willing to register and enter through the FII route.

Oil, up and away
Oil price trends in the last few years make it clear that prices can only go up (?Fuelling a crisis?, Oct 19) in future. Not just political instability, refining bottlenecks are also taking their toll. Only Saudi Arabia has got excess output capacity to temper peak oil.
