In spite of a pick-up in hiring in the technology industry, the country?s third largest IT services and outsourcing provider Wipro Technologies said it may want to restrict the number of people hired in the coming quarters as it has been doing in recent months. Unlike peers Tata Consultancy Service and Infosys Technologies, Wipro hasn?t given any guidance on the number of employees it would like to add during the year.

During the third quarter ended December 2009 Wipro reported utilisation (excluding trainees) of 84.5%, which was up 400 basis points from the previous quarter. This compares with 79.5% for TCS and 73% for Infosys.

Suresh Vaswani, joint ceo at Wipro, said, ?We would continue to keep the utilisation at similar levels of 73% (gross utilization) and tighten people supply chain management further.? This would be in line with the firm?s view of sustaining the current operating margins at 19.5%. ?We would be able to sustain current margins through productivity levers,? he added. Wipro saw net additions of 4,855 people in the December 2009 quarter as compared to net deduction of 630 people in the previous quarter.

TCS added13,000 people on a net basis while Infosys added 4,429 people.

The industry has been witnessing an increase in volumes since the last quarter and hiring has picked on the back of further expected volume gain in the coming quarters.
