The Tamil Nadu government has set up a four-member expert committee comprising senior officials of factory inspectorate from nearby Trichy, a senior official of the zonal Labour Institute and a senior official from the public sector United India Insurance company to inquire deep into the gas leakage incident at one of the plants of Chennai-based Shasun Pharmaceuticals at SIPCOT Industrial Estate located at Cuddalore, approximately 200 kms away from Chennai.

The expert committee has been asked to submit a detailed report in a month?s time on the incident per se as well as suggest measures to ensure that such incidents do not take place in future.

The move follows the leakage of a chemical substance called bromine kept in different bottles with in a chemical unit of Cuddalore plant on late Monday night, which affected more than 100 people in the nearby villages. All those affected were admitted to the nearby hospitals for treatment for irritation of eyes, stomach problem, nausea, skin allergy. Subsequently, Cuddalore collector ordered the closure of Shasun’s plant till further orders.

In a late-evening press release here on Wednesday, the committee has been asked to inquire/analyse deeply on what went wrong into the gas leakage and make clear suggestions to ensure that such major mishaps will not occur in future by incorporating suitable technologies.
