Post the Mexico government?s advisory that all governments and businesses have to be shut for five days from May 1 in the event of the swine flu outbreak, India?s largest IT firm, TCS and India?s largest BPO company, Genpact have shut their centres in the country for the time being.

While TCS has asked its 1,400 strong workforce to work from home, Genpact is re-routing most of the business process outsourcing work to other locations and is also asking people to work from home, wherever possible.

TCS has a global delivery centre in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. A company spokesperson said that TCS is abiding by the government?s mandate. ?TCS has strong business continuity plans and projects will not be affected,? she said.

The centre services some local Mexican clients along with doing some offshore work for US-based clients. The spokeswoman added that there have been no cases of swine flu detected among TCS employees in Mexico. Its employee base there has a mix of locals and foreigners.

Meanwhile, India?s second largest software company, Infosys Technologies has already asked some of its employees to work from home and has also moved some work to other locations to ensure business continuity.

It has around 200 employees based in Monterrey in Mexico. The work carried out by Indian IT companies in Mexico for the local clientele will not be impacted much as they will also be shut.

However, companies are making alternative plans to continue service to their clients outside Mexico that are catered to from the country. On the other hand, Genpact has centres in Chihuahua and Sonora in Mexico, which will resume from May 6.
