The 30-share Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) once again failed to breach the 18,000-mark and retreated from the day?s high of 17,980 points to close almost flat.

It opened the day on a high note at 17,831.68 points, but remained range bound through out the day often stepping in to positive and negative territories. The Sensex ended the day on a flat note at 17,773.36 points marginally down by 3.78 points or 0.02% after touching an all-time high of 17,979.18 points. However, the Sensex closed the day with a weekly gain of 482.26 points or 2.76%. On the other hand, the broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ended the day at 5,185.85 points, losing 22.8 points or 0.44%. Meanwhile, India’s headline inflation based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) rose 3.42% in the 12 months to September 22, 2007 higher than previous week’s figure of 3.23%.

Market breadth was deep in the red with 1,825 stocks ending the day in the red when compared to 940 stocks that had advanced on BSE. Among the Sensex pack, only 7 stocks managed to end the day on a high note while 23 stocks ended in the red. Among the BSE sectoral indices, only Capital Goods index managed to show a decent performance.
