Benchmark indices, after losing more than 3% in early trades due to fall in the overseas markets managed to recoup its losses on the back of some short covering at lower levels and some fresh buying in metal and oil & gas sectors on Monday. The 30-share Sensex ended the day below the 16K mark at 15,923.72 losing 51.80 points or 0.32% while the broader S&P CNX Nifty ended the day on a positive note gaining 28.80 points or 0.60% to close at 4,800.40 points. The Sensex closing below 15,924 level was last seen on July 24, 2007 at 15,794.92 points.

Though the key indices ended mixed, one positive from the day was the increase in the trading volumes at both the stock exchanges which stood at 102.48 crore shares in the cash segment as compared to 84.58 crore shares in the last trading session. The trading volumes in the derivatives segment increased to 67.29 crore contracts on Monday from 55.51 crore contracts on Friday last.

However, according to the provisional figures provided by the stock exchanges (SEs), the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers at Rs 1,248.04 crore while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were buyers at Rs 758.79 crore on Monday.
