The earnings of the Indian Railways during April – October, 2008 registered an increase of 15.76% at Rs 44,547.52 crore compared with Rs 38,481.83 crore during the same period last year.
The goods earnings have gone up from Rs 25,688.18 crore during April-October, 2007 to Rs 30151.97 crore during April-October 2008, registering an increase of 17.38%.
The passenger revenue earnings during first seven months of the financial year 2008-09 were Rs 12,575.05 crore compared with Rs. 11,160.90 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 12.67%.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 1,127.55 crore during April-October 2008 compared to Rs 1,059.87 crore during the same period last year, up 6.39%.
The total sundry earnings have gone up from Rs 572.88 crore during April-October 2007 to Rs 692.95 crore during April-October 2008, showing an increase of 20.96%.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during April-October 2008 was 4119.63 million compared to 3867.08 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.53%.
In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-October 2008 was 2193.73 million and 1925.90 million compared to 2117.02 million and 1750.06 million during the same period last year, an increase of 3.62% and 10.05%, respectively.
Also, the railways have generated Rs 25,502.95 crore of revenue from freight during April-September 2008 as compared with Rs 21,447.48 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 18.91%.
Railways carried 401.89 million tonne of freight traffic during April-August 2008 as compared to 370.25 million tonne carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 8.55 %.
