Region-wise economic development in a country as big as India (?Evening out regional inequalities?, Oct 23) seems nearly impossible. Can we imagine a project like Reliance Petrochemicals in every state? It?s easier said than done, even as India climbs the development ladder. At best, we can create export zones, like the SEZs in China. So, our government, like China?s, should try its best to maintain an economic development balance. But by and large, it should simply learn to live with the way things go.

E-filing extension
This year, CBDT has made e-filing of Income Tax returns compulsory before October 31 for tax audit cases and corporate entities. However, for the past many days, the IT Department?s e-filing site is not supporting the generation of XML files. As a result, many people are unable to upload even a single file of this genre. On enquiry on the Income Tax helpline, I?m told told that the site is having technical problems which will be sorted out in some more time. However, till Wednesday, the apparent ?sorting out? had not happened. It now looks likely that e-filing of IT returns before the deadline may not be possible if the site is handicapped like this. Will the concerned authorities take immediate action to rectify the technical snag or give a reasonable extension of time for e-filing returns?
