It is clear that the government has realised the importance of attracting FDI (?Govt clears 14 FDI proposals?, Oct 19) into the country. However, the situation often turns grim after the investment arrives. Take for example Posco, the biggest FDI project in the country. A series of kidnappings and opposition stirs, coupled with government apathy, has marred the project since inception. What is the signal that India is sending to the world?

Secrecy steelframe
Your editorial (?Scrambled line?, Oct 23) has rightly observed that there is very little justification for information sent in by district collectors and other officials to the Centre to be kept confidential. The public at large needs to know details of money spent on development programmes. Excessive secrecy often acts as a cover-up for incompetence and corruption. Governance can command respect and legitimacy only if it is absolutely transparent and even-handed. Is there really any need for steelframes of secrecy if a reasonable level of honesty and efficiency exists in spending?

It?s not ratatouille
Prakash Karat is trying to revive the Third Front (?Jumbled up and tumble dried?, Oct 25) which his predecessor HKS Surjeet had abandoned. Whether Karat is wiser will be watched with interest, because too many cooks can only end up spoiling the broth.
