The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the right to education Bill to provide compulsory schooling for all children up to 14 years. The Right of Children to Free & Compulsory Education Bill, 2008 will operationalise the fundamental right mentioned in Article 21-A.
The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha in November 2008 and was pending clearance from the Lok Sabha. The discussion on the Bill lasted over two hours and was finally passed in its 2008 form with the minister saying that disabled children would also be included in the category of disadvantaged children and that this would be outlined in the ?model rules?.
