Increase in the use of special effects on screen and success of animated movies like Hanuman has given birth to animation industry in India. According to a recent survey by Nasscom, animation industry is expected to grow by 25% annually. Talking to FE about this, Naveen Gupta, director, Frameboxx animation studio said, “There is growing demand for animated movies. These movies not only attract children but also lure older people. Also, animation has other various applications like in architecture, advertising and product design.”

Commenting on the job prospects in the city he added, “Springing up of large television channels in the region has given boost to the demand for animation. Also it has become more easy to set up studios now, as the price of hardware has reduced significantly.”

According to market experts, 90% of the animation products are exported. Ajay Sharma, GM, Visual Media said, “Flash animation constitutes 20-30%, 3D gaming has share of 7% of total exports to countries like US and Europe. He also told FE, “Large amount of animation work like special effects in movies is outsourced to India. India has cheap studios and manpower which makes it a lucrative destination to outsource.”

Like any upcoming sector, animation faces some teething problems.

Ashwani Kumar, Art Director, Gecko Animation Studio, said, “Since people are not aware of animation there is huge deficiency of quality animation studios and trained people. The government should try to promote animation and gaming more. Special seminars should be organised in schools and colleges. He further added,

“The upcoming Film City at Sarangpur is likely to fill the required gap in the region.”
