No more worrying about running out of space on your mobile phone. The GoFlex Satellite device goes wherever your iPad or Android tablet goes and lets you wirelessly access all your movies, photos, music and documents. But before I talk about the marvel of this portable multimedia storage device from Seagate Technology, let me first declare my data proliferating digital assets: Apple MacBook laptop, iPhone 4 and iPod shuffle; Sony DVD home theatre system and a Walkman digital music player; Canon EOS 400D digital camera and so on.
The moot point is, while the devices and applications that create or capture digital information are growing rapidly, so is the data load. Like others, my data footprint is increasing exponentially. Therefore, when I got my hand on the Seagate GoFlex Satellite storage device that was debuted internationally just a few months ago, my happiness knew no bound.
This is the first battery-powered external hard drive that can help to expand storage capacity on any WiFi-enabled mobile device?a smartphone, tablet PC etc?using only Wi-Fi. It is being targeted at iOS device owners (iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch) as well as myriads of mobile devices based on the Android operating system using the free GoFlex Media downloadable from the Apple App Store or Android market.
Anyone with a PC or Mac can use the included software to sync up files from the computer to the GoFlex Satellite. The ?Flex? part of the name comes in as users can choose to use a cord for faster transfers, namely with the included USB 3.0 cord. (The drive is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 technology.) After you load your media on to the GoFlex Satellite device, it can be streamed to your tablet or smartphone via its Wi-Fi connection, making the solution completely wireless.
Leave it in your bag, set it on the table, place it anywhere in the car?with a range of up to 150 feet you?ll never feel tethered to your storage. The GoFlex Satellite device creates its own Wi-Fi network, so there?s no Internet required?take it all with you and access it wherever, whenever. I tried to stream videos over a iPhone 4 and it worked perfectly fine.
The GoFlex Media app is simple and easy to use. It is tailored for the GoFlex Satellite device allowing easy sort through your media library by videos, photos, or music, keyword search, and folder and thumbnail views. The app also allows download movies and other media from the GoFlex Satellite device, so that the content can be enjoyed later when not connected, or extend the battery life of both?the mobile device and GoFlex Satellite.
The GoFlex Satellite device can stream movies and other media to almost any device that has a Web browser and Wi-Fi connectivity. If your friends and family have a smartphone, tablet or laptop, they can enjoy your media content too. In fact, the GoFlex Satellite device can broadcast content to up to three devices simultaneously, so everyone in the family can enjoy their favourite content. Battery life ranges from up to five hours of continuous high definition video playback or up to 25 hours when on standby mode.
So far, there is only one capacity option, that 500 GB. For a layman, this means a whopping 300 movies! In other words, take your entire media library with you and enjoy it from the comfort of your living room.
