Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) will delay its pan-India launch and export plans for its new sports utility vehicle (SUV) ? XUV5OO, as it has got a better-than-expected response from the five cities it launched the model in on October 1 and due to the limited production capacity of the vehicle at the moment.

M&M bagged over 5,000 bookings for XUV5OO in the mere six days after its launch, the company said in a release on Friday evening. These bookings are from the five cities where the SUV was launched which include Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai.

?We will have to delay the launch in other markets in the country by not more than three months,? Pawan Goenka, president ? automotive and farm equipment sectors, M&M told FE . M&M is also re-visiting its export plans with the model.

The SUV, that was launched in South Africa simultaneously, is seeing a healthy response from the customers, said Goenka, adding that the company would have to delay the launch in other export markets citing the domestic demand.

?We are overwhelmed by the response we have got in just six days of the launch,? he said. There is a waiting period of 12 weeks already built up on the SUV.

Currently, M&M is producing 2,000 units per month and Goenka said that the company has already started ramping up the capacity at the Chakan plant near Pune to meet the demand.

Among the bookings, the model?s four-wheel drive variant ? W8 – has got the maximum bookings. The W8 all wheel drive (AWD) model is priced at R12.88 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). The entry-level variant ? W6 is priced at R10.80 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). The XUV5OO was launched on September 29 and the bookings opened on October 1.

Three of the dealers FE spoke to in Mumbai said enquiries for the SUV had been good so far. ?We are finding it difficult to handle the large number of enquires for the XUV5OO,? said a representative from NBS International at Chowpatty Sea Face, Marine Lines.

SP Shah, director general, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), said, ?This is the finest product from M&M. The pricing of the model is excellent. M&M products are proven products with good market research gone behind them. This product will be a runaway success.?
