The Mayawati government has decided to distribute 1.1 lakh two-room houses free of cost to people living under the Below Poverty Line in Uttar Pradesh. In addition, the owners of these houses did not need to pay any water or house tax on these houses. The decision was taken by the state cabinet here on Friday.

These homes, which are to be constructed under the Kanshi Ram Shahri Gharib Awas Yojna, will cost Rs 1.75 lakh.

The government had made provision of Rs 500 crore and has clarified that more money would be pumped in, if needed.

In the first phase of the scheme 1,500 houses will be constructed in 60 districts with dense population and 1,000 each in the rest of the districts. The funds for each district will be given in one go to avoid any obstruction in the execution.
