The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Monday fell by a marginal 47 points to close below 13,000 level after failing to hold on to early gains with capital goods and power counters coming under pressure.
The BSE barometer, which was up by 179 points at the outset, lost 47.36 points at 13,994.96, after touching the day’s high of 14,221.04 .
Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 22.20 points at 4,223.05.
Marketmen said investors continued to speculate on how far US government would succeed in bailing out its financial houses.
Profit booking also emerged after Friday’s steep rise in share prices to pull down the Sensex, they added.
