A fast track court sentenced a 20-year-old man to rigorous imprisonment of 20 years for attempting to murder and subsequently raping a woman, who had been asking him to return the money he owed her.

The court observed that the ?convict had shown the highest degree of depravation, brutality and barbarism. His act is certain to arouse a feeling of intense indignation and hatred in the mind of any prudent person of the society?.

The incident dates back to September 2012, when the victim and the accused, Suraj Kumar, a resident of Najafgarh, began working at a firm in Rohini.

The victim knew Kumar through a friend. The two were introduced after Kumar managed to secure a job for the victim at a firm in Dwarka for a month.

According to the chargesheet, Kumar asked the victim to subscribe to a chit fund committee because he said he needed of money. Later, he asked her for Rs 1 lakh with which he purchased a motorcycle and cleared his electricity bills. On March 4, 2013, when the victim asked him to return the money, Suraj slapped her and reportedly manhandled her sister.

Thereafter, the victim filed a complaint following which Suraj was arrested. However, after Suraj?s father intervened, the matter was settled and Suraj released.

On March 9, Suraj called the victim to Sector 11 in Dwarka on the pretext of returning the money. When she reached there, Suraj took her on his bike. When the victim was least expecting it, Suraj caught her from behind and stabbed her in her hand and shoulder before stabbing her in her throat with a kitchen knife.

Later, he raped her and threw her in the drain before fleeing with her bag containing Rs 2,000. However, the woman survived.
