The government on Friday approved the signing of an agreement between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for establishing an institutional framework for cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
Briefing media persons on the decision taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, home minister P Chidambaram said the agreement would facilitate initiatives to curb activities of terrorists and organised criminal groups.
It will help coordinate an approach to combat international terrorism, organised crime and drug trafficking, illicit trafficking in weapons, ammunition, explosives, radio-active and nuclear material, human trafficking, money laundering, counterfeiting of currency and official documents, economic crimes, corruption and cyber crime.
According to Chidambaram, this agreement will also provide for mutual technical assistance including exchange of professional expertise and training of security and law enforcement personnel and organising seminars and conferences.
The government has earlier signed similar agreements and memorandum of understandings (MoUs) with Cambodia, Cyprus and Vietnam.
