The Haryana government has given a subsidy of Rs 2,000 crore on power to the agriculture sector.

This was stated by Haryana power minister, Randeep Singh Surjewala after administering oath of office to Rohtash Dahiya as a member of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) here.

He said that the nuclear power plant to be set up at Kumharian in Fatehabad district was under consideration of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has already assured that the plant would be set up in Haryana.

Surjewala said that a sum of Rs 40,000 crore was being spent to increase generation of power and make transmission and distribution systems more efficient. This huge investment included Rs 23,000 crore for generation of power and Rs 13,000 crore for strengthening transmission and distribution systems.

He pointed out that during the tenure of the present government, technical and distribution losses of power had reduced by about 10%. He hoped that these losses would be further reduced with the strengthening of transmission and distribution systems.

When the present government had assumed office under the leadership of Bhupinder Singh Hooda as chief minister in March 2005, the state?s own generation was 1,587.4 mw. As compared to it, the state would have additional generation capacity of 1800 mw by the time the term of the present government would be over, he said

As a result of effective steps being taken by the state government to increase generation of power, Haryana would, perhaps, be the first state in the country where one power generation plant would be commissioned each year up to 2012 thus making Haryana self-sufficient in power.

He said that the government had formulated a plan to increase power generation by additional 6,000 mw and it would be achieved by 2012.

While giving details, he said that 600-mw thermal power plant has been commissioned at Yamunanagar. Two units of 600 mw each at Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Plant, Khedar in Hisar would also start power generation in first fortnight of September and December 2009 respectively. The project was coming up speedily and it was 23 days ahead of schedule.

He said that state would get 750 mw of power from the upcoming 1500 -mw Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Station at Jharli in district Jhajjar. It was being set up by the National Thermal Power Corporation.
