India has urged the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to consider recommending to the United Nations (UN), the formation of a UN Peace-keeping Force under a Unified Command, to prevent piracy attacks in the international waters off the coast of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden in the Arabian Sea.
Participating in the five-day long council meeting currently underway in London, India urged the council for taking urgent steps to provide assistance and security to international shipping irrespective of flag, nationality of seamen, etc. of the vessels. The call given by the Indian delegation, was supported by many other member-countries in the Council.
