Global pepper production during 2012, is projected at 3,20,000 tonne as against 2,98,400 tonne during the previous year, according to a new report released at the 39th annual meet of International Pepper Community (IPC) in Indonesia.

The annual meeting of the IPC collates figures provided by the member nations to arrive at production, consumption, and export figures for 2012. Production is seen higher by 7.2% largely due to higher production reported by Vietnam and Indonesia.

Internal consumption by the producing countries during the year 2012 is projected around 1,24,870 tonne and exports during the year is pegged around 2,46,045 tonne as against 2,42,250 tonne during 2011. Of the total, 2,48,250 tonne is projected as black and the 71,905 tonne as white pepper.

Vietnam, the largest producer, is projected to have production of 1,10,000 tonne for the new crop which comes to the market by 2011 February. The production estimate shows an increase of 10,000 tonne when compared with the figures of 2011. IPC estimates that Vietnam has exported 1,15,000 tonne during the calendar year of 2011 while importing nearly 20,000 tonne of pepper.

During the next year, the country is expected to export 1,20,000 tonne and have a stock of 14,500 by the year-end. At the end of 2011, Vietnam is expected to have carry forward stock of just 10,000 tonne.

Indian production is projected to decline by 5,000 tonne to touch 43,000 tonne during 2012.

The country is estimated to import 14,000 tonne of the commodity and export nearly 21,000 tonne. It still remains the largest consumer of pepper from the producing countries with domestic consumption estimated at 40,000 tonne, which is considerably lower than the consumption during the current year, which is pegged around 45,000 tonne.

India is estimated to have carry ?forward stock of 15,370 tonne with it and the exportable volume for the next year is projected around 32,370 tonne.

Production in Indonesia is projected to increase to 41,000 tonne from around 33,000 tonne during 2011. Indonesia is expected to export 28,500 tonne during the coming year. Malaysian production is projected around 26,500 tonne marginally ahead from 25,600 tonne of 2011. Non-IPC countries are projected to contribute 47,000 tonne of pepper during the coming year.
