Raj Thackeray?s edict to shopkeepers in Mumbai to have signboards in Marathi is absurd. Politicians, by wont, play to the gallery; one can understand that. However, Thackeray?s strong-arm tactics take the game too far. Just as the the Constitution guarantees the right to use a regional language, it also gives freedom to a citizen to speak and use any language anywhere in India. Resort to the use of force to enforce one?s political agenda is unconstitutional and illegal. Regionalism is blocking India?s democracy and is a big hindrance to its economic development.

The message from Tata Motors? Singur fiasco is loud and clear. Industrialists would now think hundred times before investing in any Left-leaning state.
